Dog becoming possessive about owners
In the last few months, I have noticed that there is a growing trend of more pet parents coming forward with cases of aggression. Severe biting tendencies. No, don't get me wrong. All of them are well loved and well cared for dogs.
But,when I ask them what are the triggers? They are usually clueless or just haven't found ANY specific contexts or situations where the dog bites. Most of them have bitten (actual bites resulting in blood loss) close family members, the owners themselves and guests. It could simply be during picking up a food fallen on the floor, while going to the bathroom, or random events.
In majority of these cases, it came to light after prolonged questioning the owners is that the dog is used to living with a particular member in the family for majority part of the day. The dog is always accompanying them to whichever room they go to, is always clinging around during activities, everything etc.
What happens is that, the dog in question grows possessive/jealous/insecure about the owner. They tend to snap or growl or stare at even the family members who just came over to chat with the person. They sometimes even go after the owner if things aren't according to the dog's wishes.
Not every dog turns possessive. But, a LOT of them do.The dog forms an impression that he/she has to protect the member at all costs. The dog is stressed out all the time. There is no OFF switch. Sort of leads to a gross imbalance in the dog's state of mind.
What you could do pro-actively prevent it?
Help your dog to learn to be independent. Chalk out boundaries. Let him/her know that it's OKAY to be alone and not freak out and follow you all day. Basic Obedience also comes handy. Seek out professional help in this specific regard, if possible.
